Hydrocele is a medical condition in which fluid collects around the testicle inside the scrotum, causing swelling. It is usually painless but can create discomfort, heaviness, or a feeling of fullness in the scrotal area. Hydroceles are common in newborns but can also occur in adults due to infection, injury, inflammation, or blockages in the spermatic cord. In infants, hydroceles often resolve on their own within the first year of life as the natural channels close. However, in adults, the condition may persist or gradually increase in size.

A hydrocele is generally not dangerous, but large or painful hydroceles may affect daily activities, walking, or sitting, and can sometimes indicate underlying problems such as infection or hernia. Diagnosis is usually simple and includes physical examination and ultrasound to confirm the presence of fluid and rule out other conditions.

If the hydrocele becomes large, uncomfortable, or associated with infection, surgery known as hydrocelectomy is performed to remove the fluid-filled sac.
